Beyond the canals and the perfectly aligned streets of Amsterdam, there are villages, nature reserves, gardens and long sandy beaches that make up a mosaic of colors and varied cultural activities.
They are only one morning getaway or a whole day, near Amsterdam, accessible by public transport. The main attraction of these proposals is that they adapted to all kinds of travelers, from those interested in art and enthusiasts of bike routes, to families with children who seek the most typical landscapes.
1. Cycle route
Ouderkerk, at 12 km from Amsterdam, is a cyclist city, very good to spend a day. Its old town and cafes along the river Amstel are lovely.
2. Walk among tulips
The best way to visit Keukenhof is by bicycle from Leiden, half an hour by train from Amsterdam.
3. The King day
The whole country is dressed in orange on April 27 and the streets are filled with exhibitions, concerts, children’s shows and stalls with oranjebitter liquor.
4. Zandvoort Beach
Former fishing village, is now a destination for surfers, families and lovers of long walks on the sand.
5. The windmills of Zaanse Schans
The most iconic Dutch landscape, this population is concentrated in the west of Amsterdam. It is a very attractive place to visit with children for its range of activities: boat trip on the Zaan river; Mill Museum; the Aldersbrook, a small port with eclusas; a store from 1887; one factory of cheese and the Zaans museum of local history.
6. The Medieval city of Haarlem
This city known for its old town, the Teylers Museum and the Frans Hals gallery
7. The Naarden gaps
The kingfisher is one of the inhabitants of this natural reserve. Boat tours are organized.
This village situated on an island and the neighboring Volendam preserve traditional wooden architecture.
