Little Maltese archipelago is situated at 90 km south of Sicily. With its three islands, in order of size: Malta, Gozo and Comino, the geographical entity amazes visitors with its natural and historical goals, unusual small size contributing to the existence of a high density of surprising places.

Limestone, an spectacle

Because I chose to talk first about the spectacle of nature, we begin  with the main actors: limestone and surreal blue water of the Mediterranean. Indeed, the combination of these two elements creates a natural environment which, if it were to fit on a scale of styles, I could name half romantic and another half surreal. Part of the high coast, a good presence on the shore of the winding of the three islands (Malta, the largest, with 17 of its 20 km) is the place where they were created karst phenomena. Roca creations evolve in color from yellow to dark green of plant pigments and describe the result of a process of erosion of thousands of years, colossal triumphal arches, as well as the island of Gozo, Azure Window or chains caves as The Blue Grotto in Malta,  here, as in a cathedral vaults wide open over the visitor, water transparency creating great phenomenon of light reflection or ceilings fantastic game full of lace or disturbing phenomena of fluorescence from any body immersed. Light seems to radiate from the hands of those who are curious to try the bizarre phenomenon own skin. To these are added a very special conformation of beaches that give the feeling lunar soil. Going down to the sea, in the same place yellowish shades and gray limestone is spread a carpet of smooth waves, beach lovers has available stone formations lining the most diverse guises. On this place, in the sixteen century was  creating small lakes on the outskirts for obtaining salt by water evaporation. Today, although the technique has evolved the picturesque small basins developed in many places are still used. Whether we refer to karst phenomena, such as the cave where Calypso detained as a prisoner to Ulysses , be it by some simple, low stretch, fully known today, with stalactites and stalagmites extensive deposits of prehistoric fossils of hippos, elephants and antelope, the caves of Maltese archipelago have the chance to still for a long time in the attention of specialists and tourists.
