Spectacular scenery and a chance to see the big five, traveling on a luxury train for a traditional safari.
For those who love luxury trains, nature and wildlife, the safari train which link Durban and Pretoria, South Africa, represent an opportunity not to be missed. Old renovated wooden wagons, is an attraction in itself, and, in the last stage of the journey, the train is pulled by a steam locomotive. You have the opportunity to live a safari like in the old times, you can observe the animals of the group of five large: lion, leopard, elephant, black rhino and buffalo. From Durban, in the morning, you can see the lush hills of KwaZulu-Natal marching in front of the eyes, housing traditional villages with round huts, followed by smooth plains of Swaziland. The open observation car allows you to admire the scenery. On the second day of travel, you can enjoy the first trip to Hunting Reserve Mkhaya, privately-owned. If you wake up before dawn and get on SUVs Landrover Cabrio, you will have the great chance to see the animals before they can see you. After a few hours drive to north towards the end of the afternoon, you will participate in a walk through the famous Kruger National Park, followed by a traditional Boma dinner. Boma is a courtyard where the food is cooked simply grilled, is surrounded by burning pyres to frighten and deter animals. The next morning, while enjoying breakfast, the train makes a spectacular ascent of the Drakensberg Coast, you arrive at Pretoria at the afternoon.
The trip is organized once a week, from January to April and October to November. On the winter dry season is good to see animals, because the grass is short, no leaves on the trees and the animals regularly visit the watering places. The travel time is three days and two nights.
The trip can be done from Pretoria to Durban with a slightly different route: the trips by car to observe animals take part in Mkhaya and Hluhluwe reserves. Take appropriate clothing for these excursions by car: Wear beige clothes, brown or green, in several layers, especially in the morning cool.
